Mommy and Jamaal
This is a Mother's Day tribute to the Mothers in my Family and to mother's everywhere! 2012
Mommy as a little girl

Mommy and Felicia - on Mother's Day back in the 80's
The spawns of Mommy
(Mama Akua's son) Khalil on the left and Grandma on the Right

Mommy and Seth (Ife's husband)
Patricia's (Mommy's) first great grandson, Zaire
Me (Ife)

Patricia's and Renee's Playlist (scroll down for Ouida and Ayanna's...young heads last...lol)

Outstanding-The Gap Band

This song reminds me three people, Mommy, Aunt Renee and Mama Akua. I can see Mommy (Pat) doing her hip winding dance now. Aunt Renee, I can see you doing that move that Ouida always imitates. Mama Akua, I can see us (me, you, Ouida and the kids) in your kitchen back when you took us in (lol...it's the truth), dancing and singing to the best oldies!

Mommy loves Funk- She said that this song is pure, unadulterated fonk (funk)!

Don't Stop the Music-Yarbrough and Peoples

The Marvelettes- Play Boy

Now, you know this is our jam!!! I love this song, it reminds me of when I accompanied Mommy to Aunt Doris' for her sister's 70th Bday. We went to Detroit, and we went to the Motown museum! We all have to do that together one day. xoxo

Candy- Cameo

Who doesn't like this song? This could go on Ouida's and Ayanna's too.

Round the Way Girl - LL Cool J Now, this goes out to Aunt Renee and Ouida! Aunt Renee loved this song when I first moved to Georgia, and she threw me a birthday party where I made my first appearance on film (my 9th Birthday Party). I remember the song being played at my party, and Aunt Renee loved when he said, "Lisa, Angela, Pamela, Renee...I love you, you from around the way."
However, as Khalil so eloquently put it...LL is Ouida's "baby daddy". They actually bumped into him in the City and Khalil said, "there go ya baby daddy" (lol).

Check this out!

I found the full 15 minute version too!
I have a good story about PFunk- I think it was Christmas '01 or something when Mommy and I went
to the Atrium and Atlanta and saw the Brick, The S.O.S Band, and The P-Funk. Now, all the ATL people were there for the first two opening acts, but Mommy and I wanted to be baptised in the Funk by the High Priest himself, non-other than George Clinton. Now, I got baptised (fully dunked, not just sprinkled), but Mommy chickened out. By the time Parliament came on, it was only about 30 of us left in the previously packed venue. So, George Clinton pulled me up onstage, and Mommy was oh so welcome to join, but she declined! Could you believe that?! So, I boogied on down by myself, but we still had the best time! Who knew the best concert I would ever attend, would be with my mother? We took off on the Mothership and had a blast!  Now all we have to do is find a Prince concert (with Morris Day and the Time too).

Parliament- Not Just Knee Deep

I chose the song below because it reminds me of my family in general. One thing that all mothers
usually teach their children is to just be thankful for what you have. Grandma used to always talk about the children starving in some country (I can never remember, but it wasn't Ethiopa...Mommy said it was some country in the 50's that was struggling with hunger) who would kill one another over a grain of rice.

Just Be Thankful- William Devaughn

Oops Upside ya Head- The Gap Band

I don't know why, but this song reminds me of Aunt Renee, Ouida, Mama Akua and Mommy all in one. This is a really good song. It also reminds me of Mama (Grandma) because I used to sing this to her when I was practicing for American Idol, which Mommy drove with me 732 miles x 2 (there and back) to Cleveland, OH Brown's stadium for the auditions. They herded us like cattle, and I didn't even get to sing for Paula, Randy and Simon! I haven't watched the show since that day! Pahaha!

Don't Disturb This Groove - The System

Please don't ask me why this song reminds me of Mommy, but it does. I don't know if she liked it or not...crazy, huh?

Regina Bell- Baby come to me
Could have sworn Mommy liked this song.
Levert- Cassanova

I think this song reminds me of Ouida and Ayanna. LOL. Don't ask me why. But you guys were a duo around the time this came out. LOL.

Bootsy Collins- I'd Rather Be With You

Yabba Dabba Doo, Baby!

An Angel in Disguise- Brandy

Mommy and Yolanda (Audrey Jr.) used to blow this song up!

Now, what kind of child of my mother's wouldn't list the Isley Brothers?

My 5 siblings should remember how many times we heard Mommy blasting this song or talking about how she went to one of their concerts all by her lonesome (she wasn't complaining).
The one thing I share with my mother is the love for a really good guitar riff; I know I know, Dave Chapelle did a study and the results showed that black people can't resist the drums. It's true in our case as well, but we can't resist a bad ass riff!

So, this one is for you, Mom! Dirty Diana- MJ (RIP)

Who gave Grandma that singing James Brown figurine? I wish I could remember! Jaja probably when he was selling stuff.

James Brown- A man's world

Maybe I'm just like my mother - she's never satisfied.

Prince- Doves cry

Ouida and Ayanna's Playlist

Follow me- Classic House

Who sings this? This reminds me of when you guys would get ready to go clubbin (on Lexington)...was it called The Choice? I remember wishing that I were old enough to accompany you, but I would be left watching Friday Night Videos all by my lonesome.

A couple of these songs remind me of going to an annual New Year's Eve Party in Harlem with Ouida and Kahlil...wonder if they're still doing that?

This is a song that reminds me of Ouida because she's a Luther fan if I ever saw one.
Ouida and Ayanna know all about Newcleus and Jam on it!
RIP Teena Marie- Ooh La La -
I can hear Ayanna singing this in my head like it was yesterday.
Ouida, I don't know why, but this reminds me of you. You used to like this or was it Ayanna? Who didn't like this song?
 Mtume - Juicy Fruit
Anything from this error reminds me of you guys...lol.

Guy- Let's Chill (Let's Cheee-yell)  Stop fantasizing about that boy! I'm not trying dredge up no old memories...haha.
This reminds me of Ouida and Mama Akua for some reason. I love
Roy Ayers, though.
This is who Erykah Badu think she is...lol.

This song reminds me of Ouida from when you were there for me during my roughest patch in life- when I was an angst filled teen. Dude, thanks for being there. I don't know if I ever said, "thanks". Seth told me that when he was going through, he didn't have any elder siblings to run to. So, I'm lucky to have so many siblings to turn to.
Next- Wifey
This song is in my C.D player right now for one reason only-Ayanna. I hated this song, but she made me like it with her fist pumping antics in the club. I have to post a video showing you how Ayanna dances to this song. LOL.

Nasty Girl-Vanity 6   Anytime I hear Vanity, I think of how you guys left me on the bus when we were coming back from seeing Action Jackson- she was in the movie. To your credit...I can recall you all running back to get me. See, Fiya wasn't born yet, so I was the baby. Junior was there too that day.
Cameo-Strange This could fall under Mommy's videos and Aunt Renee's too. However, I think of Ouida when I hear this. I don't know why.
There's a specific part in this song that reminds me of Ouida

Planet Rocks- is this Afrika Bambaataa?

Morris Day and The Time- 777 9311  This is such a Mommy song, but I'm putting it here to remind you guys. I remember Ore and Rashida literally slapping themselves at the party, "I'd feel a little better if you slapped my face!" LOL

Remember how Safiya used to sing this song? haha

Why You Treat Me So Bad- Club Nouveau

Songs Mom Hates

There is no Yin without a Yang. No Good without Evil. So, I have to balance it out with songs that Mommy can't stand...lol.

Anything By Roberta Flack

Anything By Anita Faker...lol. Baker. I actually LOVE Anita Baker, but Mommy says she sings through clenched teeth. LOL.

Aunt Renee doesn't think Mariah Carey can sing. lol.
Don't let Akilah hear you say that. She loves Mariah Carey!
Here's one of Akilah's Favorite Mariah Carey songs:

Mommy can't stand Millie Jackson

Mommy used to live in the same neighborhood as Stephanie Mills. I don't think she was a big fan.

The African Connection!

Now, One thing all the women in my family love is African Music. Ouida turned me on to Fela Antikulapo, which changed my life. I feel sorry for deaf people who can never hear Fela's music.

I love this video because the drummers are so on point.

Llamban is one of my favorites. So, I want to share a video with the Mothers who introduced me to African Dance and African Culture. Love you guys!
I should have posted this video first, but I love this Mendiani performance by this family.
Watch the little girl, lol.

Mendiani!!!

Well, I know we don't get involved in all this Mother's Day stuff, but I didn't get around to picking a date for celebrating you guys, and since Mothers all around America are being celebrated, I don't see why not celebrate you as well!

Patricia is a mother of 6

Renee is a mother of 1

Akua is a mother of 1

Ouida is a mother of 3

Ayanna is a mother of 1
